Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat is the role of the parent? With distance learning at NFC Academy our teachers and staff partner with the parent in the learning process of each student creating each a Learning Team for each family. The parent is the primary facilitator/teacher on site in the home, but with the resource of their assigned teacher at NFC Academy. Most often our students' place of study will be in their home. Our program offers the flexibility to design your personal study program and location to suit your lifestyle and personal preference. From NFC Academy each student/family will receive daily lesson plans, an interactive Internet based curriculum, an accredited degree, all records, transcripts, and needed support. Do parents construct the daily lesson plans? No, NFC Academy manages and directs the lesson plans for each subject. At the beginning of the start of a course NFC Academy will establish the lesson plans working through the Guidance Department with the parent. The lesson plan set-up will include the school calendar that will guide the student through the course of study. If needed, the calendar can be adjusted when a situation such as extended illness, or family plans call for it. To change the calendar the parent should contact the school administration. A student would be expected to complete the required course work in a 10 month period, but may request an extension for a total of up to 12 months overall. How long does the enrollment process take? If all material is submitted timely a typical period for the process is about 4 weeks. The diagnostic test will extend this period up to 2 additional weeks. When does the school year begin? However, it is important that reading skills and math skills be at a level that allows the student to do the work in their assigned curriculum. NFC Academy does not provide additional assistance for students who may need direct assistance by a teacher and have a problem working as an independent learner. Will I receive report card or progress reports? The regular progress reports in each course are available to parents on-line anytime during the course. Report cards will be issued in a traditional nine week format to provide the needed documentation needed for school evaluations. How much work is done using the computer? Most all of the work is done using a computer as this is a web based curriculum. Students will need to be comfortable navigating a computer and have some skills in using a keyboard. It is advantageous to have good typing skills, but students can do well as they learn the keyboard. Will my student take an annual achievement test? Yes, our Guidance Department will conduct an annual achievement test for each student enrolled full time at NFC Academy. This test will be like the academic work that is web based...the test will be taken over the Internet. What arrangements do I have to make locally if I enroll at NFC Academy? Each state has different approaches to home schooling. You should check your state's requirements to see what they require. One good place to check is a home schooling association in your area. If you live outside the U.S., you can still enroll at NFC Academy as all activities are conducted over the Internet...there are no limitations for enrollment as long as Internet access is available. Will NFC Academy prepare my child to enter college? While each college and university sets their own standards for admittance, NFC Academy curriculum provides a college preparatory curriculum that will prepare students for entry into most colleges and universities. A family has the option when working with our Guidance Department of selecting a track that is general studies which changes the higher level math and foreign language requirements to other electives resulting in a general diploma. What about transfer credit into NFC Academy? NFC Academy accepts credit from regionally accredited schools at face value. Additionally credit is accepted from schools accredited by IACCS/FACCS (International Association of Christian Colleges and Schools/Florida Association of Colleges and Schools), ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International), CITA (Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation. Credits are accepted normally from associations who have a protocol with the National Council of Private School Accreditation. What about credit earned through Home schools? Credits are accepted two ways from home school students. If they were registered under an umbrella association the credits are typically accepted. Other home school students have their credits accepted through a portfolio development using curriculum, lesson plans, grades, and testing information from the homeschooling program.
