Homeschooling Tips For Spatial Children

Homeschooling www.nflcacademy.com/homeschool-kindergarten-curriculum.htmlis a rewarding experience where you get to learn alongside your child and watch them become independent and confident of their abilities. Homeschooling, however, is not without its own set of challenges. Amidst your own family’s schedule, burnout and keeping the momentum, it can be difficult to keep your children engaged. This can become doubly difficult if your child is a spatial learner. With these homeschooling tips for spatial children, we hope that you are better able to engage your child and cater to their specific needs such that they meet their full potential.
What is spatial learning?

Firstly, it is important to understand what spatial learning is. The fact of the matter is that we all take in the world around us spatially, from navigating maps to remembering faces to reading graphs and even completing puzzles. For spatial learners, they tend to use their visuospatial abilities more than other abilities and they may even be slightly weaker at other skills. They tend to think about the big picture and don’t worry too much about the little details. This can translate to them being weak in spelling and grammar but conversely having good intuition to solve problems. With the following homeschooling tips, you are well on your way to ensuring that your children can learn better.

Make sure to include Illustrations and Charts

Do remember to include illustrations for any topic that you try to teach them. If the subject is history, find pictures of famous people or landmarks that will help them retain the information better. For older children, try helping them create flowcharts and diagrams that facilitate big-picture thinking. It helps when they can see the links between different historical events or chemical reactions in one place.

Typing skills for Communication

For young children who are spatial learners, their handwriting may not be quite up to the mark yet. Moreover, spelling, or grammatical mistakes can greatly impede their communication in written assignments. Thus, it can be enormously useful to enroll them in typing classes from as young as 3 or 4 years old. They will take to typing quickly and this will ease their frustration of not being able to communicate. Handwriting can develop later on too.

Use props while reading to them

Most children enjoy being read to and spatial learners are no different. However, it is likely that they lose interest or become bored if the book seems inaccessible. This could mean anything from small font sizes or minimal pictures. Thus, don’t just expect them to listen. Give them a related prop in their hand or make sure they can clearly read the words.

Take them on Field trips

Children need to be under a waterfall of success and so it is important to take them out on field trips where their strengths will surely shine. They are adept at navigating the world around them so you could even make a game of it and ask them to read the map and lead you the destination in the fastest possible time!
