Questions Parents Ask When Choosing An Online School For Their Child

9/3/2021

Today, parents are increasingly sending their children to virtual schools rather than a traditional one. However, before they can make a decision, they may have questions that need to be answered. Here are the common questions parents ask when choosing an online school for their children.
Will all the Schoolwork be Done Online?

The answer to this question depends on the online school you choose. Duly accredited online schools take into consideration the grade level of students on designing their curriculums. For elementary level, lessons are given online, but most of the schoolwork is done offline. For middle school, a well-balanced amount of online and offline schoolwork is given. This is to facilitate a smooth transition of the student to high school where most requirements are done online. In choosing an online school, make sure to look for a program that provides this kind of process.

Where is the Curriculum Based On?

Most online schools include math, science, and English in their curriculum. It is best to check whether the state you are living in has taken up the Common Core State Standards. Keep in mind that when choosing an online school, the curriculum is also designed to meet the requirements of specific states.

When can Students Consult their Teachers?

Certified and Duly Accredited online schools are 24/7 ready to give assistance to their learners. Online school teachers are trained for student-centered approach wherein full attention is given to learners. It is inevitable that students will have lots of concerns and clarifications about different lessons. In addition, they may also have non-academic issues that they need help on. In choosing an online school, look for one with teachers who are dedicated to support the academic progress of the students.

How is Academic Placement done?

When transitioning to online school, it is advisable to look for a provider that starts a new school year close to the schedule of a traditional school. During the enrollment process, a team of educators will evaluate the credentials of the students for appropriate academic placement. For high school, a school counselor plays an important role for proper career guidance and in ensuring that the student will graduate on time. If the student decides to do the transition in the middle of the school year or the semester, online schools may still be able to accommodate them. However, they may need to complete previous school assignments so that they can catch up with others who started with online schooling from the beginning of the school year.

What is the Required Pacing for Online School?

Unlike traditional schools, online schools operate on a flexible learning schedule. The pace depends on the learners' unique learning objectives, styles, needs and patterns rather than following a strict schedule being imposed on them by the school. As long as the students finish all their schoolwork before the year ends, they can choose how fast they are going to learn.

If a student is academically advanced, accredited online schools have ways to accelerate learning. The school may give more complex and specialized courses to further develop the academic potential of the academically advanced student.

Do Online Schools Provide Ways for Students to Socialize?

Definitely. Online schools give opportunities to students to improve their social skills. Online does not mean students have to be secluded and just focus on their computer monitors. Online schools integrate exciting, engaging, and interactive activities in their curriculum. This provides an avenue for students to collaborate and connect with each other. Students also have the liberty to form study-groups for brainstorming and maybe go on educational trips to acquire and apply their learning, as well as socialize.

What Level of Computer Skills Do Students Need to Have?

Being in an online school does not mean students are expected to have advanced computer skills. Basic knowledge and skills to operate gadgets are enough since the school provides assistance, various tools and materials to guide the students as they go on with their online classes. With constant practice, the student will become tech-savvy in no time.
