SING THE PHONICS SONG
So, you might ask…just what is phonics and how do I teach it?  You can find a number of definitions for phonics with some like this:
  • Phonics is a method of teaching people to read by correlating sounds with letters or groups of letters in an alphabetic writing system.
  • Phonics is a method for teaching the reading and writing of an alphabetic language. It is done by demonstrating the relationship between the sounds of the spoken language, and the letters, groups of letters, or syllables of the written language. This is also known as the Alphabetic principle or the Alphabetic code.

PHONICS AND VOWELS
  • Long Vowel Sounds
  • Short Vowel Sounds
PHONICS and LONG VOWEL SOUNDS
Long vowel sounds are where a vowel makes the same sound as the way it's name is pronounced. For instance, the 'a' in the word 'skate' is an example of a long vowel. Long vowel sounds can be made up of just one vowel or a combination of multiple vowels.

PHONICS and SHORT VOWEL SOUNDS
Short vowels do not sound like their letter in the alphabet. They are more common than long vowel sounds. We see short vowels in words like bat, red, fit, hot, and cut.

A consonant blend is a combination of consonants that are placed together without being separated by a vowel. The most common consonant blends are combinations of two or three consonants together at the beginning or end of a word. The letters in a consonant blend work together to make one sound, but all the individual letters can be heard within the pronunciation. Sometimes, a consonant blend may contain a silent letter or a double letter.

Consonant digraphs contain two or more consonants, that, when combined, form a single consonant phoneme (speech sound.) An example would be the consonants, “g” and “n” that form the grapheme “gn” and represent the sound /n/ in words like gnome and gnat.
